What makes the Bible unique?

2 minutes to read

There are many things that make the Bible (Word of God) unique.  It is the most read, most owned book in the history of mankind. Attempts to control access to if have ultimately failed, but it has cost the lives of people who worked to get this amazing book into the hands of ordinary people like you and me.

Special things about the Bible

  1. The scriptures present the concept that Jesus is the Word in human form and the Word is an expression of Jesus in written form.  This is impossible to fully comprehend from this side of eternity and is part of the mystery of our creator God. Given that the Word is Jesus, then reading, pondering and meditating on the Word of God is a form of worship toward Jesus himself. John 1:1-14:

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind…..

2. Written over 1500 years by 40 authors and yet one consistent message about God’s plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. There is no comparable document – It is truly God-breathed. (2 Tim 3:16) Can you imagine another scenario where 40 people could write books over this period of time and present one themed message?

3. It incorporates prophecies hundreds and sometimes thousands of years before the events happen. Two examples:

Psalm 22 describes Christ on the cross written approximately 1000 yrs before Jesus was born and several hundred years before crucifixion was invented.

Jeremiah 23:7-8 / Isaiah 66:8-9 /Amos 9:14-15 and others prophesy the return of the Jewish people to the Land after exile approximately 2700 yrs before it occurred. We see this fulfilled with the establishment of Israel on 14 May 1948.

4. The Bible was written in Hebrew and Greek the letters of which have numeric values.. Beyond our ability to discover in English, experts like Ivan Panin, a Russian mathematician have discovered incredible numerical patterns throughout the Hebrew and Greek texts. Ivan Panin presented a thesis that the numerical structure of scripture showed “divine origin” and generated over 43,000 pages of analysis in his lifetime.

5. It will uniquely change the direction of your life.   It will help you connect with God, will help you make life-changing decisions, it will help you understand yourself, it will be a source of wisdom and guidance in decision making and choices you make in life.  There are many things that will change your life, but the Word of God will have an impact for eternity.
